HISTORY

The history of the Veneto region dates back to when it became part of the Roman Empire in 42 B.C.. Tarvisium (Treviso) was therefore one of the “municipia” with its own government and independence.

Barbarian invasions became more frequent from the IInd century onwards until the fall of the Roman Empire when, in the Vth century, the Ostrogoths took power in Western Italy.

Legend has it that one of their kings, Totila, was actually born in Treviso. The Longobardi ruled the area from the end of the VIth century until Charles, King of the Francs, freed Italy from Longobardi dominations in 774 and introduced the country to the feudal system.

During the period of Imperial rule, Treviso was given permission By Barbarossa to appoint its own judicial system (this was 1164, 100 years after the creation of the Treviso Town Council).

From 1327, however, Treviso was dominated by the Scaligeri, Venetians, Austrians and Carraresi. The Venetians then ruled the town for a second time, suppressing Treviso’s independence for four centuries.

Under the Venetians, Treviso was known as the Provincia Trevisana and was governed by a Podestà with smaller administrative areas known as Reggimenti Veneti. After the Venetians came Napoleon and the Austrians, until the War of Independence in 1866 when the Austrians handed the town over to the provisional government.

The town was very much involved in the First World War with anti-Austrian resistance on the Piave river, on the Montello and on the Grappa mountains.

The town was very much involved in the First World War with anti-Austrian resistance on the Piave river, on the Montello and on the Grappa mountains.

Similarly, in 1945, the town suffered heavy bombing and was finally liberated two days before the allies arrived. The town lies on the central plains of the Veneto in an area rich in water resources.

During the census of 2001, ISTAT counted 76,252  inhabitants in the town of Treviso, but there are also the populations of the other contiguous clusters, although included in other municipalities. In practice, the population formed by the continuity agglomeration of these places inhabited amounts to 112,111 inhabitants.

Finally we must recall the significant expansion that has undergone the metropolitan area (or urban agglomeration) of Treviso in recent years, the largest percentage of expansion about capital city of Triveneto, and one of the largest in Italy.

There are many tourist attractions to visit in town that carry thousands of visitors from abroad and from the rest of Italy every year.

In terms of services, Treviso has every possibility for the end user, including a booming university and an impressive and functional Airport. Furthermore, it is considered one of the most sporting cities of Italy.

And it is in fact home to one of the most titled club in rugby at both male and female level, of professional clubs both male and female in volleyball playing in the Italian top division, as well as basketball, football, fencing (boasting a recent Olympic laurels ), football 5 a side and cycling.

WHAT TO SEE IN TREVISO

Chiesa di San Francesco

The Late Romanesque-Early Gothic church of San Francesco, built by the Franciscan community in 1231–1270.

Used by Napoleonic troops as a stable, it was reopened in 1928. The interior has a single nave with five chapels. On the left wall is a Romanesque-Byzantine fresco portraying St. Christopher (later 13th century).

The Grand Chapel has a painting of the Four Evangelists, by a pupil of Tommaso da Modena, to whom is instead directly attributed a fresco of Madonna with Child and Seven Saints (1350) in the first left chapel.

The successive chapel has instead a fresco with Madonna and Four Saints from 1351 by one Master from Feltre. The church, among the others, houses the tombs of Pietro Alighieri, son of Dante, and Francesca Petrarca, daughter of the poet Francesco.

Il Duomo di Treviso

The Duomo (Cathedral), dedicated to St. Peter. It was once a small church built in the Late Roman era, to which later were added a crypt and the Chapels of the Santissimo and the Malchiostro (1520).

After the numerous later restorations, only the gate remains of the originary Roman edifice. The interior houses works by Il Pordenone and Titian among the others. The edifice has seven domes, five over the nave and two closing the chapels.

Chiesa di San Nicolò

Church of San Nicolò, a mix of 13th century Venetian Romanesque and French Gothic elements. The interior has a nave and two aisles, with five apsed chapels. It houses important frescoes by Tommaso da Modena, depicting St. Romuald, St. Agnes and the Redemptor and St. Jerome in His Study.

Also the Glorious Mysteries of Santo Peranda can be seen. Noteworthy is also the fresco of St. Christopher in the eastern area of the church, which is the most ancient depiction of glass in Europe.

Monte di Pietà e Cappella dei Rettori

Loggia dei Cavalieri

The Loggia dei Cavalieri, an example of Treviso's Romanesque influenced by Byzantine forms. It was built under the podestà Andrea da Perugia (1276) as a place for meetings, talks and games, although reserved only to the higher classes.

Piazza dei Signori e Palazzo dei Trecento

To the north of the square stands the Palazzo di Podestà (late 1400) that preserves medieval features along the Calmaggiore. At the beginning of this street once stood the Fountain of tits, that after the fall of the Venetian Republic was removed and was found by Abbot Balio and currently is in the loggia of the Palazzo dei Trecento.

Piazza dei Signori is also called majority or limousine, as a punishment was practiced here called just saloon: the culprits were exposed and humiliated in public.

In the square you can see the lion with the Gospel open, a sign of the domination of Venice. Construction began in 1200, the Palazzo dei Trecento housed members of the Grand Council, which was also part of the mayor.

Was also called "Palace of Reason" as this place was the social center-city administrators. On 7 April 1944, the building of three hundred was hit by a bomb dropped by the Americans during an air raid in World War II (at that time the city was destroyed), this has broken through the roof of the main hall on the first floor after exploded before they break through the loggia below.

The south wall and part of the east are literally exploded while the remainder of the east and north wall were considered to have an overhang in some places nearly a meter.

They were built of the pillars of support to prevent the walls collapsing and it took several years before the building was restored bringing the lead and rebuild the walls collapsed.

It now remains only a scar in the outer walls of the building and part of the frescoes in the interior were destroyed.

Piazza Rinaldi

Piazza Rinaldi. It is the seat of three palaces of the Rinald family, the first built in the 12th century after their flee from Frederick Barbarossa.

The second, with unusual ogival arches in the loggia of the first floor, is from the 15th century. The third was added in the 18th century.

Ponte di Pria

Ponte di Pria (Stone Bridge), at the confluence of the Canal Grande and the Buranelli Channels.

Il Quartiere Latino e l'Università

Opened September 30, 2006, was designed by Paul Portuguese restoring the former hospital of Santa Maria dei Battuti (otherwise known as the St. Leonard), is located at the confluence of the Sile and Cagnan Grande.

The hospital has an ancient history: originally stood roughly where today is the bus station but in 1332, having to make room for a fort, he was transferred to where it still stands.

In 1795 the facade overlooking the Sile, example of fourteenth-century Gothic, was demolished and replaced with the current, neoclassical. In the early nineteenth century is carrying out other operations both in the interior, both in the yard.

The other facade, which gives the current Piazza Santa Maria dei Battuti, however, was the sixteenth century, but between the nineteenth and the twentieth century was largely rebuilt. From 1834 to 1866 the hospital also houses the customs, why it is sometimes called Palazzo della Dogana.

The idea is based on which the restoration was to recover the original style and harmonizing them with elements of modern design. Cassamarca strongly wanted by the foundation, the elegant complex includes the new square and an avenue proceeds Latin Humanism in the hospital courtyard, bordered by residential and commercial spaces. Were also recovered and made visible the remains of ancient walls.

The Latin Quarter also houses the local university center, consisting of branches of the University "the University of Padua and" Ca 'Foscari "of Venice. The courses of one lies within the same hospital, the other is located at the former Military District, beyond the Sile. The two sides are pooled in a wooden pedestrian bridge, inspired by the bridge of the Spire of Venice and also designed by the Portuguese.

Porta Santi Quaranta

The door to guarantee access to the city (walled) people coming from West (Padua and Vicenza). Built in early 1500, when the city belonged to the Venetian Republic, is entitled to 40 Christian martyrs who, soldiers during the persecution of Licinius in Armenia, refused to honor the gods and were punished for this with frostbite and burning.

Risorgimento in the door it was named Port Cavour (the road that goes from the door toward Piazza dei Signori, is still called "Borgo Cavour"), then return to the original name.

The building is square in plan and facade, made of Istrian stone, with three arches of the central one larger, above which stands the winged lion, symbol of power of Venice on the mainland.

Above the central arch, the inscription indicating the port name: in Latin for those who quit Treviso ( "Port quadraginta Sanctorum") and Veneto for those who enter ( "Port de Sancti Forty").

Canale dei Buranelli

The channel is one of the most picturesque Buranelli branches of Botteniga that characterize the old town. The place-name refers to one of the bridges that crosses the stream, known as the Bridge of Buranelli, near which is still a sixteenth-century building once home to merchants and warehouse lagoon from the island of Burano.

The city and the territory is also home to many Venetian Villas. Also worth seeing are the church of Sant'Agostino and Porta San Tommaso.

TRAVELLING IN TREVISO

The Sant’Angelo Airport

Treviso Airport is 3 miles from city center on the SS 515 (direction Padova), in an area adjacent to the ring road SS 53 which connects in few minutes to the main motorway networks.

It has 60 parking lots for staging temporary custody and 350 not far from the airport. It is managed by the company Aer Tre S.p.A..

Born as a makeshift camp to meet the needs of the Aero Club of Treviso, it became a civil airport around the mid-30s, but only in 1953 at the initiative of local authorities, arose the first civilian airport.

In May of that year was inaugurated the first flight which were added other international flights to London and Vienna. Until the opening of the airport of Tessera in 1960, the S. Angelo, became the airport of reference for the nearby city of Venice.

The turning point came in 1996 when the airport S. Angelo went into the Venice airport system as a result of collaboration between Save, manager of the nearby Venetian port and the local Aer Tre: The first came in the shares of the second with 45% of the shares and Treviso airport became the secondary port of Venice, on which were directed charter flights, air freight forwarders and low-cost carriers (Ryanair launched its first flight to London in the Summer of 1998).

2007 was a pivotal year for the airport of Treviso: in February it was inaugurated its new and larger passenger terminal dedicated to the artist-sculptor Antonio Canova and in July it was further enhanced its partnership with the Venice Airport through the increase in shares of Save SpA in Aer Tre SpA for 80%.

Passengers arriving and departing in 2007 were 1,548,219, an increase of 15.5% over the previous year (18th airport in Italy). The airports of Treviso Antonio Canova and Marco Polo Venice are the third Italian airport system (8,624,333 pax year 2007, +12.3%) with a smooth development of air passenger traffic and cargo in perspective of separation and specialization of services.

Buses in Treviso

Since January 1975, with the birth dell'ACTT, the first public management of transport services in the city of Treviso began; after that the service was extended to neighbourhood municipalities and consolidated a network topology that, in general terms, is still performed by the company.

From the historical point of view, it comes from the ACTT publicizing of FAP, a company based in San Dona di Piave. From October 30, 1998 also carries out management of parking in the historic center in Treviso with the system Trevisosta.

In July 1997 with the signing of a special convention, the member municipalities have led the transformation of the consortium as a new model association governed by Article 25 of Law 142/90 on the reform of local governments.

From 28 April 2000 the ACTT has been transformed into limited companies. Shareholders and owners are twenty towns councils of the province and the major proportion (70%) is owned by the city council of Treviso.

Marco Polo Airport in Venice

Venice Marco Polo Airport is an international airport and it is located 13 km far from Venice city centre and about 30 km from Treviso (almost all highway) and is named after the famous Venetian explorer Marco Polo.

From 2001 onwards, continues to retain the title of third pole for Italian airport passengers number.
This position rewards strategy for flights point to point, in contrast to the conception of flights at hub (currently the subject of much debate), especially in northern Italy, because they are supposed to penalize the performance of the airport of Milan Malpensa.

With this strategy, however, and thanks to the dynamic business environment where the airport is inserted, the Marco Polo airport can boast the presence of intercontinental scheduled flights, operated by major airlines worldwide: Delta Air Lines operates two direct flights with the United States of America to New York and Atlanta GA Kennedy, U.S. Airways connects Venice to Philadelphia PA, while the major airline Emirates makes a direct connection to Dubai, there is also an active link with Skyservice during summer on Toronto-Pearson, and from March 2009 Air Transat run destination to Toronto-Pearson and Montreal.

There are frequent connections made to the main European hubs, to Monaco and Frankfurt with Lufthansa flights, Air France to Paris Charles de Gaulle, Madrid Barajas airport on Iberia and British Airways to London Heathrow and Gatwick.

Alitalia has maintained flights to Rome Fiumicino, Naples, Cagliari and Bari. Air one kept flights to Rome Fiumicino, Naples and Bari. According to leaks to the press, there would be negotiations underway to bring more intercontinental destinations like Chicago, Ottawa and Shanghai.

The Marco Polo airport is included in an airport system that includes the airport of Treviso, which has undergone major renovations and is favored by low cost airlines (especially Ryanair) and for this reason, complements and completes the offer of flights of the airport of Tessera.

Management

Its management is entrusted to the company SAVE SpA, whose managing director is Enrico Marchi. Shares of the company are in the hands of Veneto Development, City and Province of Venice. First in Italy, the airport Marco Polo has outsourced  all activities handling, and in this respect in this scale three separate companies operate: Aviapartner, GH Venice and SAV.

More than one are also the security companies that operate both within the terminal and in collaboration with individual airlines, apart from the classical organs of public security as a Polaria, Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza.

Airport traffic

Venice airport system, which includes stops in Venice and Treviso, recorded 8,602,652 total passengers in 2008, confirming the position already consolidated as third pole of Italian airports after Rome Fiumicino and Milan Malpensa.

There are more than 1.000 weekly links to major domestic, European and intercontinental destinations.

Facilities

The Marco Polo airport is presented as a unit of two blocks: on the ground floor are located the arrivals, with baggage belts on one hand and on the other a lounge with bar, kiosk, tourist information, ticket sales of public transport and car hire.

On the first floor there is instead the departures area with 60 check-in desks, a restaurant, a kiosk, a bar and two banks and airline ticket offices; in the restricted area, there are numerous shops and other bars and restaurants. There is a part of the departure area devoted to non-Schengen flights.

The outputs are all over 28, 12 by finger and 7 with telescopic tunnel (direct connection with the aircraft).
On the third floor, at the check-in, there are airlines offices and operating ENAC offices, while in the sterile area, there is a waiting room called "Tintoretto Lounge" only for customers of SkyTeam and the Marco Polo room reserved for customers of all the other companies.

Numerous parking areas nearby, including a multi-storey. There are also other available car park, as well as some parking lots with easy parking disc.

Connections

The airport is 13 km from Venice, 8 km from Mestre, 30 km from Treviso and 47 km from Padua.
